## Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
#### 1. My inverters are not found by the app. What can I do?
You do not need to change any settings in the app. Please check that the Modbus protocol is activated in the inverters (
[see instructions](../../manual/en/#modbusactivate)
).
If the inverters are still not found, there is most likely a problem of processing multicast packets in the network.
This can be caused by network components that do not support the IGMP protocol at all or only partially. These components could be
* Powerline adapter
* Wifi repeater
In this case it can help to replace the components with simple Ethernet cable connections.
Some components also have a setting called "IGMP Spoofing". It may help to disable the setting.
Please also check if the iPhone/iPad are really in the same network as the SMA devices.
For example, if the iPhone is only logged into the "guest network", communication within the router to other devices in the
guest network may have been disabled.
#### 2. Which devices / sensors are supported by the app?
The Energy Meter App currently supports the following devices from SMA Solar Technology AG:
*Electrical Meters:*
- **SMA Energy Meter (V1.0, V2.0)**
- **SMA Sunny Home Manager (V2.0)** (=> supported is the build-in SMA Energy Meter only!)
- **Elgris Smart Meter** ** (=> compatible to a SMA Energy Meter)
*Inverters:*
- **SMA Sunny Tripower** (solar inverter)**
- **SMA Sunny Tripower Smart Energy (Hybrid)**
- **SMA Sunny Boy Storage** (battery inverter)**
- **SMA Sunny Island Storage** (battery inverter)**
- ...
(Only inverters with activated Modbus protocol are supported!)
#### 3. Do I have to configure something in the app so that Energy Meters can be found?
No, generally it is not necessary to adjust settings in the app, as the Energy Meter sensors are found automatically.
Simply start the app within the home network and the SMA Energy Meter will find it automatically.
In the rare cases in which the SMA Energy Meter (V1.0) has been configured with a different multicast address other than 239.12.255.254, this can be adjusted within the app in the settings dialog.
In this case the same multicast address should be set here as in the Energy Meter itself (configuration page of the Energy Meter):
Important:
Only real multicast address is valid to be set, not a raw host address!
Due to the type of communication, only one IGMP multicast addresses are valid.
It is not sufficient to use a simple host address ("Single Cast Address") in the settings.
Misconfigured the Energy Meter could only send data to the single IP address (only one participant).

#### 4. How does the app communicate with the SMA Energy Meter Sensor?
The device and the iPhone / App must be in the same local network.
There the Energy Meter sends UDP packets to port 9522 to the multicast address 239.12.255.254 using the IGMP protocol.
The network address can be set in the Energy Meter (only Energy Meter V1.0) and in the Energy Meter App.
SMA uses the IGMP protocol for communication, which ensures that all participants can find each other.
The SMA Energy Meter Protocol is used as the higher level communication protocol.

#### 5. Can I use the Energy Meter app while on the go (VPN)?
Yes, the app works remotely if you have set up a VPN network. However, all devices must first be detected locally within your home network.
Unfortunately, older SMA Energy Meter 10 models do not support VPN usage because their firmware lacks the updated communication method.
Additionally, multicast groups cannot be used over VPN, as the system now relies on 1:1 communication instead of multicast.
You can set up a VPN, for example, using a Fritzbox. AVM provides a guide on how to configure a WireGuard VPN:
https://avm.de/service/vpn/wireguard-vpn-zur-fritzbox-am-smartphone-oder-tablet-einrichten/ (German)
Make sure to enable the "Broadcast Subscription" parameter in the app under **Settings > Energy Meter - Communication** when using VPN. This parameter also functions during local access.
This way, you’ll always have access to your solar system – no matter where you are!

#### 6. The app just doesn't show any Energy Meter
In most cases, one of the network components does not (or nut fully) support the IGMP protocol correctly.
Please try following:
- Make sure that the iPhone is in the same WiFi network as the Energy Meter Sensor.
- The Energy Meter Sensor is set to the target address "239.12.255.254" (it MUST be a multicast address, a singlecast address does not work!)
- A network switch or powerline modem may not process IGMP multicast packets correctly. Often these are powerline adapters. For troubleshooting, you can try to replace such network components with a simple connections via Ethernet cable, if possible. Some network switches do not process IGMP correctly either. You can really only try to replace / swap them.

#### 7. Does the Energy Meter App support multiple sensors / devices at the same time?
Yes. If multiple sensors / devices are installed, you can select them with the icon at the top right in most dialogs.
In general there is no limit to the number of devices. The app shows all found sensors in the current network.

#### 8. After I activated the Modbus protocol in the solar inverter, the Sunny Home Manager no longer works!
If, in order to activate the Modbus protocol, you have simultaneously assigned a new installer password to the device via "PUK", you have also changed the system password in the inverter at the same time. The installer password is also the plant password. The Sunny Home Manager will then no longer be able to access the inverter, as it assumes the "old plant password". The solar power can then no longer be shown in Sunny Portal, for example. In the PV plant logbook, there are then additional errors of the type
"Authentication error: Level: 10 Device: xyz"
(at plant or Sunny Home Manager level).
In this case, the "plant password" in the plant must be re-adjusted everywhere.
The easiest way is to set the new plant password for the Sunny Home Manager (and, if necessary, for all other devices in the system) so that the plant password is identical everywhere. If there are several inverters in the plant, the plant passwords / installer passwords must also be replaced by the new password.

#### 9. Can I still install the app on an old iPad with iOS 9.x?
It is possible to install the latest compatible app version of the Energy Meter app for iOS 9.x (app version 2.2).
Unfortunately, future app updates can no longer be offered for the old iOS version.
How to install an old app version:
- Open the **App Store app** on the iPad/iPhone
- Go to the "**Purchases**" section. All purchases that have ever been downloaded are listed there.
- Search for the "**Energy Meter**" app in the list.
- Tap on the download symbol.
- The following message appears: **"Do you want to download the latest compatible version? This version of the app is not compatible with this device. "**
- Tap on **Download**. The app will now be downloaded.
To make the help function to work again on the iPad, install an additional root certificate on the iPad:
[](../../certificates/isrgrootx1.der)
Once successfully installed, the new profile can be found in the iOS settings: General -> Profiles
